Serpentine Arts Technologies And Gabriel Massan Present A New Art-game Powered By Tezos: Third World: The Bottom Dimension

Serpentine Arts Technologies, in collaboration with Brazilian artist Gabriel Massan, are thrilled to present the art-game “Third World: The Bottom Dimension,” slated for release on June 23, 2023.

Powered by the Tezos blockchain, this groundbreaking project explores the cultural and socio-political intricacies of Brazil’s colonial legacy.

As an original member of the creator community on Tezos, Gabriel Massan showcases his innovation and creativity in this art-game.

His dedication and spirit are commended by Valerie Whitacre, Head Of Art at Trilitech, who emphasizes the importance of community in the creation process:

“Gabriel was part of an original community of creators on Tezos.

The game showcases a true collaborative effort both from Gabriel and their community, but also from the wider ecosystem that inspired development of creative content.”

The game takes players on an adventure through a world conceptualised by Gabriel Massan and other artists, including Castiel Vitorino Brasileiro, Novíssimo Edgar, and LYZZA.

It’s a multi-layered experience where players can interact with different characters, narratives, and environments while experiencing the unique sounds created by experimental vocalist and producer LYZZA.

Tamar Clarke-Brown, Commissions Curator at Serpentine Arts Technologies, shares her excitement for this project:

“Web3 offers really exciting opportunities for us and our audiences to develop future art ecosystems.

The game hosts an incredible collection of artists, practitioners and thinkers, asking people to navigate through and collect different memories of play.”

“Third World: The Bottom Dimension” stands as an experiment in non-linear storytelling and collaborative world-building.

Each player will have an opportunity to witness and interact with various forms of artistic expression, from poetry and films to dialogue and narrative design.

As a project powered by Tezos, “Third World: The Bottom Dimension” also represents a significant step forward in the intersection of art and blockchain.

Players can record ‘memories’ of their own actions as they play the game, and by minting this record on the blockchain, build a public archive of multiple perspectives and actions.

Massan’s vision for this project transcends the traditional boundaries of art:

“I want to create the experience of walking through possibilities and memories of life and narrative… A work that people can walk inside. The project is a meta-simulation about warped perspectives and an exercise in terms.”

Mason Edwards, Chief Commercial Officer of the Tezos Foundation, acknowledges the art-game as a perfect blend of artistic creation and immersive experiences in the web3 landscape:

“Massan’s Third World exhibition is an elegant demonstration of how art and gaming can merge in web3 to provide an expanded field for artistic creation and unique, immersive experiences for users.

We’re excited to support Serpentine in bringing this powerful in-person experience to the community, and for the community to permanently leave their mark on Tezos.”

The exhibition of “Third World: The Bottom Dimension” at the Serpentine North Gallery from June 23 to October 22, 2023, will further extend the ideas that have driven the creation of the video game.

Visitors will experience the game in a communal setting amidst site-specific set design, sculptures, sounds, and films.

It’s an innovative endeavour that reflects Serpentine Arts Technologies’ commitment to exploring the role of the art field in the development of advanced technologies such as video games, blockchain, and AI.
