A Call For Help

A Call For Help

None of us are immune to catastrophe. We all know people that have been stricken with unexplained sickness and devastating accidents. Those fortunate enough to survive, are undoubtedly burdened with heavy debt and disability. It is here that we often see the best of humanity rise up to help.

Indeed, it is heartwarming to see a community band together to help a member that has found tough times. A community supports struggling members through a deeply ingrained and seldom recognized human truth. A shared, inherited wisdom that recognizes a necessity to help others due to our inherent vulnerability.

It could very well be us that needs help next. Life is unpredictable. We are all vulnerable. We spin on our oasis of life that orbits a massive ball of fire in an infinite universe consisting primarily of devoid, empty space that is mostly incapable of supporting any life. Tenuous, to say the least!

Occasionally, we are reminded that all great collaborative efforts start small. I am a big believer in the ripple effect in which the tiniest of actions can develop into tremendous outcomes. I have witnessed in my own life how the smallest acts of kindness can result in potentially infinite beneficial unforeseen repercussions.

While we may never know the full outcome associated with acts of kindness, we should not underestimate the potential. That is why I was so happy to be introduced to the efforts within the Tezos community to support Dennis Klicker.

Dennis has a story that is all too human. He is not perfect. He is not a movie star or celebrity. You may or may not agree with his political inclinations. He is like all of us in some ways. But when it comes down to it, none of this is all that important.

You see, Dennis is a staunch Tezos supporter who has dedicated countless hours helping, supporting, and onboarding community members. Like so many people this year, Dennis fell on tough times.

Due to his Type 1 diabetes, Dennis was at significant increased risk for complications associated with a COVID-19 infection which forced him to make some difficult and choices between his health and career as a web developer. Eventually, Dennis found himself out of work without health insurance.

Through a series of additional unfortunate events, Dennis ended up in the hospital for treatment for diabetic ketoacidosis without health insurance. He was fortunate to recover but was saddled with a massive hospital bill that would seem insurmountable to most of us.

Facing this overwhelming situation, Dennis made a crucial decision to stand up and mount an effort to reduce his debt burden. To pay off some of his medical debt, he minted a copy of his whopping hospital bill on Hic et Nunc.

His NFT hospital bill sold some copies, but it also served as a plea for help that was heard loud and clear by the Tezos community. In fact, it led to a ground-swell of support for Dennis and his effort to pay off his hospital debt.

Recently, the leaders at Kalamint have offered their support with their “Humble Request to the Kalamint Community” in which they called upon artists to donate NFT pieces and for collectors to support the effort with the proceeds going towards paying down Dennis. On Sunday, July 25, a flash auction will take place in which all the proceeds from the donated NFTs will go towards Dennis’s medical bills.

At XTZ News, we recognize the importance of community. We also recognize the importance of helping those in need. We urge you all to rise to meet this challenge as you are able. We may not be able to eliminate all the world’s problems, but we can support smaller, worthwhile efforts such as this one to “right some of the wrongs.”

In doing so, we are helping to build a stronger, more resilient community that believes in the value of compassion and kindness.
